Internship Programmes

The Japanese Studies Internship Programme provides an opportunity for students who have just completed their second or third year at university to acquire work experience through on-the-job training either at prestigious Japanese organisations in Hong Kong or at Hong Kong companies that have a strong connection with Japan. We are honored to have the support of these organisations, and we value the considerable support they provide our students by enabling them to participate in internship programmes.

Host organisations in 2022 include:

Canon HongKong Co., Ltd.
Hong Kong Japanese International School
Hong Kong Keizai Shimbun – Compass Communication
Hyogo Business and Tourism Centre Hong Kong
Japan Airlines (JAL)
Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG)
Mitsui & Company Ltd.
Shin Japanese Learning Center

Students who are chosen to participate in the internship programme can also enrol in the course JAPN3082 Japanese Studies internship: Capstone experience (6 credits). This course offers students an internship learning experience by allowing them to take their classroom knowledge into the community. Students will have an opportunity for experiential learning, earn credits towards their degree, and engage in a rich experience by working in an organisation or company that has a real impact on society. The internship experience draws on coursework offered by the Department of Japanese Studies and allows students to work in Japanese companies, or in companies which have a strong connection to Japan and demonstrates the use of Japanese in the community.

All interns are required to submit a 2,000-word report, written in English, in which they reflect on their internship experience. This report will also be submitted to your host organisation.

Eligibility
Year Two and Year Three students are eilgible to apply. Preference will be given to students who are majoring in Japanese Studies. We will consider exceptions.
JAPN2088 is a prerequisite.
In addition to Japanese language proficiency, some hosts may stipulate additional requirements such as a minimum 3.2 cGPA.
You may apply for the Summer Exchange Programmes and the Internship Programme simultaneously as long as the Exchange Programme of your choice does not begin in the first few weeks of the summer vacation. Be sure to clearly indicate your summer plans on the application form.

Duration
The duration of the internship will vary according to the host organisation. It can range from two weeks to twelve weeks. The internship programme can begin in early June, following the exam period, or later in the summer.

Conditions
Each host organisation determines the conditions under which the intern will work, according to company regulations and other internal criteria.
