Japanese Government Scholarships
There are two types of scholarship offered annually by the Japanese Government’s Ministry of Education and Science (MEXT):
1. Around ten Monbukagakusho Scholarships in Japanese Studies are offered each year to undergraduate students currently enrolled in Japanese Language and Japanese Studies courses at tertiary institutions in Hong Kong. The scholarships cover a year's tuition and living expenses for students wishing to pursue a course in Japanese Language and Culture at a Japanese university designated by the Ministry of Education and Science.
2. Monbukagakusho Research Scholarships are awarded to Hong Kong students who wish to do postgraduate research in any discipline (with the exception of medicine and selected science subjects) at a Japanese university. The duration of the scholarship is two years for a master's course, and three years for a doctorate course.
Resona Bank Awards for Japanese Studies
The Resona Bank Awards for Japanese Studies are open to full-time undergraduate students as well as prospective full-time postgraduate students who will read the degree of M.Phil. or Ph.D. in the field of Japanese Studies. Preference will be given to those candidates who aim at carrying out research on the economy of Japan and who are expected to render their contributions to the local society or economy during and after their studies.
The scholarship is awarded on the basis of (i) academic merit, (ii) the candidate's research proposal, and (iii) financial need.
The scholarship has a value of HK$60,000 for one year and may be shared between two successful candidates.
Japan Student Service Organization (JASSO) Scholarship
The JASSO Scholarship offers a monthly allowance of ¥80,000 for 10 or 11 months, subject to change without notice. Applications are by invitation only, from host universities in Japan.
Shun Hing Exchange Scholarships
Shun Hing Exchange Scholarships are awarded to second or third-year undergraduate students who will be partaking in academic exchange for a year to universities in Japan under the HKU Worldwide Exchange Programme or Department of Japanese Studies Exchange Programme.
These scholarships are awarded mainly on the basis of academic merit (minimum CGPA of 3.20), and secondarily on financial need.
Up to three awards are made each year, at the value of up to $50,000 per award. The scholarships cannot be held concurrently with other scholarships.
