Abstract:
In her talk, Professor Usami will briefly review two different approaches to politeness studies - one based on strategic and the other on normative language use. She will then discuss the latest findings in her work to develop a universal “Discourse Politeness Theory” that incorporates both these approaches and provides researchers with a framework within which to contrast politeness behavior in languages with and without honorifics.
