Assessment in Japanese Language Education

In her talk, Professor Majima will discuss assessment, evaluation, and standards in the field of language learning and teaching. She will begin by introducing various definitions and concepts of assessment, with an emphasis on those set out in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), before moving onto the European Language Portfolio (ELP), as well as other forms of "alternative assessment". She will then examine the use of the CEFR and ELP in the context of Japan and offer an evaluation of their possibilities and limitations.

The talk will be followed by an afternoon workshop during which participants will debate the issue of assessment in Japanese language education in Hong Kong using relevant case studies as a starting point for further discussion.

About the speaker:
Professor Majima holds an Ed.D in Language Education from The University of Georgia. She is a Professor of Japanese Language Education at the Research Institute for World Languages, Osaka University, and was a Visiting Researcher at the University of Tuebingen in 2001 and at the Institute of Language Training, Nordrhein-Westfalen (LSI-NRW) in 2005, both in Germany. Her research interests include Japanese language pedagogy, second language acquisition, and language policy. She has published widely in the areas of assessment in Japanese language education, the CEFR in Japanese language education, and language policies for immigrants in Europe.
