The tour complements HKU’s undergraduate teaching agenda by providing students with an opportunity to engage in experiential learning. As future leaders, students will be encouraged to think about global problems such as recovering from natural disasters, reconstruction, and corporate social responsibility initiatives in society. Students will have opportunities to meet business executives and gain insights in to corporate life in Japan.

4-10 March 2018 (during the mid-semester Reading Week)

The tour begins in Miyagi where we will visit various sites to learn how Mitsubishi Corporation is helping local businesses and organisations recover seven years after the Great East Japan Earthquake. The tour will conclude in Tokyo with a visit to the Mitsubishi Corporation Head Office in Marunouchi, sightseeing activities and dinner with HKU alumni.

Airfare, accommodation, meals, and local transport will be provided. Students will be responsible for any incidental or personal expenses.

This field trip is offered as the credit-bearing course JAPN2096 Young Leaders Tour of Japan Field Trip. Successful students must enroll during the SEM 2 add-drop period.

As part of the course work for HKU and reporting requirements for Mitsubishi Corporation, students will be required to take photos throughout the trip which capture the theme of post-disaster recovery and renewal. These photos will be used for a photo exhibition at HKU in April 2018 as part of Japan Month. In addition to giving presentations and engaging in discussions in Japanese at key sites throughout the tour, students will also be required to submit a 2,000-word reflective report documenting their experiences in Japan.

Eligibility Criteria:
Undergraduate students currently in year 2, 3, and 4 at the University of Hong Kong, who have declared a major or minor in Japanese Studies are eligible to apply. Students are expected to demonstrate a medium-level Japanese language proficiency.
