This course is about contemporary Japanese society and culture. This course will provide students with an understanding of key aspects of contemporary Japanese society and culture.
Major concepts necessary for the understanding of contemporary Japan will be introduced, and students will gain an understanding of key problems faced by contemporary Japan, and the structures, practices, and dynamics that inform these issues. Topics may include, but are not limited to: postwar politics, economics, international relations, social and cultural movements, popular culture, demographics, war and memory, gender and sexuality, minority issues.
